The idea of speaking in front of other people may feel daunting at first, but the trick is to start small and then gradually build your confidence and abilities.
Why not start just by talking in front of the mirror? You could spend one minute telling the mirror why you would like to improve your speaking skills. After that, you could practice in front of one or two close friends or family members. Once you get over the initial feelings of mild embarrassment and awkwardness it quickly becomes easier.
You’ll be surprised how quickly the idea of speaking in public becomes less intimidating.
At Toastmasters, there are lots of opportunities to start small and build your confidence levels. Guests always get an opportunity to say a few words about themselves in front of others and may even get to participate in impromptu “table topics”. Soon after joining new members give a short “ice breaker” speech – a simple speech (using notes if required) about an easy topic – themselves!
There are also numerous supporting roles – e.g. Timekeeper – which provide a simple but valuable opportunity to speak in front of others without having to prepare a fully-fledged speech.
