What’s happened since the last newsletter?

February was short but sweet, with two regular meetings including a Valentine-themed table topics session from Grace, and icebreaker speeches from Michelle and Tracey.

Kicking off March, we also had an incredibly useful and well-received pair of workshops from district council members Hilary Briggs and Freddie Daniells last Monday, which I hope will encourage all who attended to enter the contests later this month – more from them below.

What’s planned for March?

Lots! The dates below are just those directly related to our club, but keep reading through the rest of the newsletter for even more exciting events this month:

  • Monday, 10th March – Regular Meeting Our first club meeting this month will be themed around International Women’s Day. The programme is almost full, but if you’re quick you may be able to grab one of the last couple of pre-bookable table topic slots on ClubPlan.
  • Monday, 17th March – International Speech & Evaluation Contest Night – At the time of writing, only four members have signed up for the International Speech contest, while we’re still waiting for our first entry for the Evaluation contest! Remember that all members are eligible for the Evaluation contest, and there’s no preparation required, so get yourself booked in on ClubPlan for the chance to represent the Bloomsbury Speakers at the next level.
  • Monday, 24th March – Regular Meeting At the time of writing, there is one prepared speech slot available – again, book yourself in on ClubPlan to make use of the opportunity.
  • Thursday, 27th March – Area 34 International Speech & Evaluation Contest – The winners from our club contests on the 17th will go on to compete against winners from the other clubs in our area of London. See immediately below for the details – registration is required to attend!

Area 34 contest night – registration required and help needed!

Please go along to support the winners from our club contests (whoever they may be!) in the next round at the Area 34 contest night. The event is free to attend, but as it’s being held in a corporate building, pre-registration is essential – here are the full details:

Time: 7pm-9pm
Venue: Transport for London, 55 Broadway, SW1H 0BD (directly above St. James’s Park tube station)

Reminder – dates for your diary

Here’s a quick reminder of some of the important contest and conference dates announced in last month’s newsletter:

  • Friday, 4th April  (7pm onwards) – Division L International Speech & Evaluation Contests – City Temple Conference Centre, Holborn Viaduct, EC1A 2DE – the top placed contestants in this month’s Area 34 contests will go on to face the best speakers from the other areas in North & Central London – the prize is a place in the national semi-finals.
  • Friday 9th-Sunday 11th May – District 71 King Laoire Conference – The last ever conference for District 71 as we know it will be held in Dún Laoghaire in Ireland and will play host to the UK & Ireland International Speech and Evaluation contest semi-finals and finals, featuring the winners from each division around both countries. Booking is open on the official website and the hotel is filling up fast.
  • Wednesday 20th-Saturday 23rd August – International Convention and World Championship Finals in Kuala Lumpur – While the Evaluation Contest ends at District level, the International Speech Contest (as its name implies) continues on to the world semi-finals and finals in Malaysia, with the eventual winner being crowned World Champion of Public Speaking. Perhaps this year’s winner will be from Bloomsbury Speakers!

Tip of the Month: Workshop learning points

We try to hold at least a couple of workshops a year at Bloomsbury Speakers and this month’s tip is a bit of a cheat on my part, as it’s really just a collection of my favourite learning points from last Monday’s speech and evaluation workshops which were run for us by Hilary Briggs and Freddie Daniells. If you weren’t there, here’s just some of what you missed:

  • With evaluations, keep them factual. Look at it like presenting evidence in a court of law; an evaluation is your own opinion, but your comments need to be backed up by observations i.e. what you saw, heard and felt and when.
  • In contests, use the C-C-R-R-C format. Contest judges will give you credit for having a structured and balanced approach to your evaluation. Give two commendations followed by two recommendations and finish with your most positive commendation, ensuring that your comments are delivered to the audience i.e. in the third person – and always finish with a summary!
  • The majority of World Championship-winning speeches are inspirational AND entertaining. Winning speeches typically involve a personal story comprised of a situation, a protagonist (usually yourself), a goal, a problem or obstacle to overcome and a journey to success. They will also make use of humour to engage the audience and judges – eight laughs in a 5-7 minute speech is a conservative target.
  • But that’s not all – there are common pitfalls to avoid. It’s not enough to have a problem; the situation needs to escalate as the story progresses. The story needs to be acted out in scenes (rather than told as a narrative) to help the audience to be there with you. There also needs to be a character arc so that the character changes in some way. This is usually with the help of a mentor character, because audiences will connect better with speakers who, like them, aren’t perfect and need help.

Of course, many of these points are specific to Toastmasters competitions rather than public speaking in general, but why not try applying some of these tips in this month’s contests and in our regular meetings going forward?

And finally…

Congratulations to our VP Public Relations Rufina and Immediate Past President Femi who recently announced their engagement!

That’s all for now. See you at a meeting soon!

February Newsletter – Preparing for contest season and dates for your diary

Hello and welcome to the February newsletter!

We’ve been experimenting with a different room layout at The Clerk & Well for the past month, and it seems to be preferred by the majority of those who’ve attended. However, it does take a bit more effort to set up properly, so any help from our members who can arrive early will be greatly appreciated, especially as the club’s Sergeant at Arms is absent for the time being.

Having said that, we have a temporary change of venue for our first meeting this month. This Monday’s meeting will be held upstairs at The Apple Tree, 45 Mount Pleasant, WC1X 0AE (NOT at The Real Man Pizza Company as previously announced)  just a short walk from our regular meeting place. Again, help will be needed with transporting our equipment to and from the meeting venue, so if you’re available to arrive early and lend a hand then please get in touch via president@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk.

Anyway, on with this month’s newsletter…

If you don’t have time to read the whole newsletter, you can skip to the bottom for a short summary of the main points.

What’s happened since the last newsletter?

Despite several last-minute dropouts due to illness, we had two packed meetings in January, featuring icebreaker speeches from new members Svetlana and Grace, as well as a No. 10 speech from Paula who has now achieved the title of Competent Communicator and helped the club achieve its eighth point in the Distinguished Club Programme!

We also co-hosted the hugely successful ‘Belly Laugh’ night with three other clubs and some of the funniest Toastmasters in London. If you weren’t able to attend, take a look at Clerkenwell Speakers’ write-up and photos from the event.

What’s planned for February?

There’s only so much we can fit in to the shortest month of the year, but there’s still plenty for us to look forward to:

  • Monday, 10th February – Regular Meeting – Please note the change of venue for our first meeting this month. As mentioned above, we’ll be at The Apple Tree, 45 Mount Pleasant, WC1X 0AE (NOT at The Real Man Pizza Company as previously announced). The programme for the meeting is full but there are still some pre-bookable table topic slots available for members on ClubPlan.
  • Monday, 24th February – Regular Meeting – Back at The Clerk & Well, this meeting features the always-entertaining Bronia in the role of Toastmaster, so it’s well worth coming along even if you’re not taking part. At the time of writing, there are slots available for an advanced speech evaluator and a Sergeant at Arms to greet and introduce the guests. Again, book yourself in on ClubPlan.

Dates for your diary – contest season is approaching!

This is an early warning that the spring contest season is just around the corner, so start thinking now about whether you’d like to enter our International Speech and Evaluation contests next month. In the meantime, here are all the important dates for your diary with further details to follow nearer the time:

  • Monday, 3rd March – International Speech & Evaluation Workshop – We’re hosting a special event featuring workshops from district leaders Hilary Briggs and Freddie Daniells. Invitations have already gone out to members and are now open to guests too. See below for the details.
  • Monday, 17th March – Bloomsbury Speakers International Speech & Evaluation Contests – Booking for contest places is already open on ClubPlan, but keep an eye out for an invitation from our VP Education Jo with everything you need to know. If you don’t intend to compete but would like to help with organising or running the event, please contact Jo via education@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk. We’re also looking for members who are willing to go and judge at other clubs’ contests – again contact Jo if you’d like to help.
  • Thursday, 27th March – Area 34 International Speech & Evaluation Contests – The winners from our club contests will go on to compete against winners from the other clubs in our area of London: Holborn Speakers, Tube Talk, Lawspeak, Society Speakers and Clerkenwell Speakers.
  • Friday, 4th April – Division L International Speech & Evaluation Contests – the top placed contestants in March’s Area 34 contests will go on to face the best speakers from the other areas in North & Central London.
Booking is already open on the official website.

International Speech & Evaluation Workshop – Monday, 3rd March

In preparation for the above contests, we’re very privileged to welcome Toastmasters District 71 (UK & Ireland) Council members Hilary Briggs and Freddie Daniells to give two special workshops on Monday, 3rd March.

Hilary (serving Lieutenant Governor Education and Training) will be running her workshop Evaluate with Confidence! in which she’ll share her expert knowledge of:

  • What makes a great evaluation;
  • How to build your skills in a systematic way;
  • Top tips for Evaluation Contests.

We’ll also get to hear from Immediate Past District Governor, Freddie with his Seven Insights into Winning International Speeches. With a wealth of experience in Toastmasters, and having attended the last four World Championship of Public Speaking finals, acting as a judge in one and helping coach a finalist in another, Freddie is perfectly placed to share his findings on what makes a successful contest speech.

Unfortunately, with such a small venue, there are only a limited number of seats available, so please only book yourself in if you can definitely attend (and cancel your booking if you find out later that you can’t make it).

https://springcontestworkshop.eventbrite.co.uk

Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to refine your skills for the upcoming contests and give yourself that extra edge for these and future competitions!

Clerkenwell Speakers news

If you’re unable to make it to the above event, you may be interested to know that Freddie Daniells will be running his workshop Exceptional Evaluations for Clerkenwell Speakers on Wednesday, 19th February at The Apple Tree (which is Clerkenwell’s new permanent venue as well as our temporary venue for this week’s meeting).

Clerkenwell Speakers was formed last summer when it became apparent that we at Bloomsbury Speakers could no longer meet the overwhelming demand for membership on our own. Since then, they’ve managed to meet the minimum requirement for new members within just six months and will be holding a special chartering meeting on Wednesday, 26th February to celebrate this important milestone.

Chartering means that they are now officially recognised as a Toastmasters club and have all the privileges that come with it (such as being able to hold and enter contests). Congratulations to everyone involved in getting the club to where it is today!

(Also, don’t forget that Bloomsbury members still have free membership of Clerkenwell Speakers and can book in for roles and speeches on their ClubPlan until the end of March.)

Membership waiting list

The waiting list for membership of Bloomsbury Speakers currently has fifteen names on it and, with only two new members being admitted each month, some of them may still have a long wait ahead. However, we are giving priority to those people on the waiting list who continue to attend meetings regularly as a guest and are willing to give their first speech in the month they join – so if you’re keen to join our club then please keep coming along to our meetings (at least three times) and sign our guestbook on each visit.

We will be in touch with all the guests on the waiting list in the coming weeks to make sure that they would still like to continue – however, a full list of all the clubs in Greater London is available on The London Speaker, and we highly recommend visiting at least one or two other clubs before deciding on which one to join, as each club has its own distinct personality. But of course, anyone is welcome to attend our regular meetings as a guest at any time with no obligation to join.

Tip of the Month: Competing makes you a better speaker

Aside from giving you the extra opportunities to speak in front of an audience, entering speech contests can improve your public speaking skills in ways that speaking at a regular club meeting may not provide:

  • It combines all the skills from your previous projects. While this should be happening as you work through your manuals anyway, it can often be tempting to just focus on the objectives of the project at hand. Since there are no specific objectives in a speech contest, it’s the perfect opportunity to bring together everything you’ve learnt so far into one speech – from structure and rhetoric to persuading and inspiring.
  • It makes you more conscious about connecting with your audience. Making a one-to-one connection with members of your audience through gestures and eye-contact will mean they’re more likely to understand and appreciate your message. Since you’ll be judged by anonymous individuals around the room, you’ll be more aware of the importance of connecting with everyone on an individual level, and doing so with the judges will mean they’re more likely to score you favourably.
  • It gives you targets to aim for and exceed. This is probably the single aspect of contests that pushes speakers to improve each time. Whether you agree with the judges’ decision or not, your biggest competition is often against yourself and the parts of your public speaking that you know need improvement. If you’ve previously been placed in a speech contest but never won, then perhaps your next target is to progress to the area finals. If, like our members Femi and Janet last year, you’ve previously got as far as the division contest, then think about (and get help from you mentor on) what you need to do better next time in order to compete at the national level.

As you can see, the benefits of speaking in a contest environment are significant so it’s well worth giving some serious consideration to entering next month and learning as much as you can from the experience.

That’s all for now. See you at a meeting soon!

Distinguished Club Programme (DCP) update

Toastmasters International provides a framework of objectives called the Distinguished Club Programme (DCP) that clubs should aim to achieve within the Toastmasters year, and awards recognition to those clubs who are successful. The goals include attracting a healthy intake of new members, making sure our committee members are trained in their roles and, most importantly, ensuring our members progress through their communication and leadership manuals.

Although we’ve just marked the start of a new calendar year, we’re actually half way through the Toastmasters year (which runs from July through to June) and I’m pleased to report that we’re already close to achieving seven of the ten goals in the DCP. The three goals we have left to achieve are all to do with members completing their communication awards, so if you’re close to finishing your Competent Communication manual, don’t hesitate in contacting your mentor and our VP Education Jo (education@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk) to plan how to get through your remaining speeches in the next six months.

Working towards and achieving these goals is a mutually beneficial process for individual members and the club as a whole, as it produces the kind of environment that members want to remain part of because it helps them achieve their best. Success breeds success, so perhaps think about how you can help the club achieve its goals this year while achieving your own too.

Revamping our mentoring programme

As mentioned above, the Bloomsbury Speakers committee has been looking at the club’s mentoring process and how to improve it. Under the previous system, mentors were only allocated to members who specifically requested them and the numerous mentoring relationships were difficult for one person (our VP Membership & Mentoring) to keep track of. This meant that new members could occasionally slip under the radar and not make the most of their membership and the help available.

Rajeev, our current VP Membership & Mentoring who has overall responsibility for ensuring a positive experience for club members, will now allocate every new member to one of a select group of experienced members of the club who will mentor them through their first three speeches. After this, it will be down to the individual member to decide how best to continue their own development, whether that is with their allocated mentor, another member of the club or on their own.

If you have any questions about the mentoring programme, or would like to be a mentor yourself, feel free to contact Rajeev directly at mentoring@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk.

International Women’s Day meeting – Monday, 10th March

Our VP Public Relations, Rufina, is organising a special themed meeting to mark International Women’s Day which is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women – past, present and future. The day itself falls on 8th March, and we would like to join women all around the world in honouring the work of the Suffragettes, celebrating women’s successes and also reminding ourselves of the inequities that still need to be redressed by marking the occasion at our regular meeting on Monday, 10th March.

We are using this as an opportunity to get as many women in the club as possible to sign up for roles on this particular day. It is also meant to encourage and motivate women to not just attend regular meetings but to sign up for upcoming contests in the spring in which they have previously been greatly under-represented.

So, to all the female members of our club, please take part in this meeting in honour of yourselves by signing up on ClubPlan (and especially if you’d like to give a speech on the themes that are celebrated on International Women’s Day).

You can also expect to receive a more personal invitation from Rufina in the next week or so.

(P.S. Of course, our gentlemen members are welcome to take part too, but preferably in the evaluation roles.)

Tip of the Month: Join a public speaking ‘gym’

Gym membership soars in January as thousands resolve to exercise, improve their fitness and put their bad habits behind them. As we all know, exercise pays dividends only if done frequently and effectively – and public speaking is no different. Going for long periods without putting your public speaking skills into practice can mean losing the confidence you’ve built up over time, forgetting the tips you’ve learnt and reverting to undesirable habits like using filler words.

Toastmasters clubs provide the ‘gym equipment’ – speaking opportunities and evaluations – you need to exercise and tone your public speaking muscles safely and regularly, and the best way to do so is to make the most of every opportunity. This means setting out your goals for when you want to perform specific speeches from your manual and maximising your time in front of an audience by taking on functionary roles or table topics at every meeting in between.

Even if you’re not a member yet, you are of course welcome to visit Bloomsbury Speakers as a guest as much as you want, where you’ll have the opportunity to introduce yourself to the club and perhaps try some impromptu speaking. So join a public speaking ‘gym’ this year, maximise your membership and reap the benefits of regular exercise – and unlike an ordinary gym, you can actually improve just by watching others. If that’s not a reason to keep coming, I don’t know what is!

That’s all for now. See you at a meeting soon!

December Newsletter – Season’s greetings, plus news of two joint social events!

Hello and welcome to the December newsletter!

It’s December and the festive season kicks off now! See below for all the important details of our plans for the month ahead as well as the New Year.

Meanwhile, we’re continuing to get a full house of members and guests at our regular meetings. If you’ve visited us recently and are interested in joining, contact membership@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk to be added to the waiting list.

We’re still giving priority to those guests who continue to attend regularly and are willing to jump straight in with their icebreaker when they join, so start thinking about your first speech and get in touch!

If you don’t have time to read the whole newsletter, you can skip to the bottom for a short summary of the main points.

What’s happened since the last newsletter?

Since the last newsletter, we’ve admitted one more new member – Rebecca – who has already taken the plunge and given her icebreaker speech. I’m sure we’ll all make her feel as welcome as possible.

We had another packed couple of meetings in November. As well as Rebecca’s icebreaker, we also had a debut speech from Aislinn, a semi-impromptu speech from Femi and an emotional, persuasive speech from new (but experienced) member Stella.

What’s planned for December?

With the Christmas party season upon us, we’ve had to make a few changes to our normal schedule. Our two December meetings are booked in for the first and second Mondays of the month (rather than the second and fourth). Furthermore, both meetings will take place downstairs at The Real Man Pizza Company, just across the road from our usual venue, but on the plus side we’ll be having pizza at the end!

  • Monday, 2nd December – Regular Meeting (moved forward) – Our first meeting this month has a full programme of speakers, though we’re still looking for someone to act as Sergeant at Arms for the meeting, which involves greeting the guests as they arrive, asking them to sign the guestbook and then running the guest introductions section just before the break. There are also pre-bookable table topic slots available. Sign up on ClubPlan.
  • Monday, 9th December – Regular Meeting – Our last meeting of 2013! At the time of writing, there is an Icebreaker slot available for anyone who is waiting to give their first speech at the club, as well as topic slots and the Sergeant at Arms role explained above. Again, book yourself in on ClubPlan.

Christmas social in Shoreditch

In the past at Bloomsbury Speakers, we’ve really only ever marked the Yuletide period with some extra drinks and nibbles at the end of our last meeting of the year – which we still intend to have on 9th December. However, thanks to some eleventh-hour negotiations on the part of our VP Public Relations Rufina, this time we’re also tagging along with our friends from Clerkenwell Speakers to the Area 33 Christmas Social. Here are the details:

Date: Friday, 6th December
Time: 7pm onwards
Venue: Juno, 134-135 Shoreditch High Street, E1 6JE
Dress code: RED or Xmas fancy dress
RSVP: info@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk

It’s free to attend, though there will be a £10 cash charge if you want food (let us know in your reply). Come along to network and have fun partying with lots of other Toastmasters from our part of London. See you there!

Bloomsbury’s membership of Clerkenwell Speakers extended

Clerkenwell Speakers has got off to a fantastic start this year and, as its main sponsor, Bloomsbury Speakers’ members have enjoyed free membership of their club for the first six months.

The good news is, Clerkenwell have now agreed to extend this arrangement for a further three months meaning that all Bloomsbury members can continue to book roles and speeches on their ClubPlan up to the end of March 2014.

We highly encourage all of our members to take advantage of the extra opportunities to speak at another club, as many have done already. If you don’t yet have an account on their ClubPlan, contact president@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk and we’ll get you added.

‘Clerk-bury’ New Year social and special event

Clerkenwell and Bloomsbury Speakers clubs are collaborating as ‘Clerk-bury’ (or should that be ‘Bloom-enwell’?!) on a couple of events in January:

  • Friday, 17th January – New Year social – The date is set so put it in your 2014 diary once you have it, though the venue and activity are still to be decided. Suggestions are welcome!
  • Wednesday, 29th January – Special event + workshop – This promises to be a big night with a workshop and speeches from several former humorous speech champions. Details will follow nearer the time, but save the date.

Tip of the Month: Evaluate everyone

It sounds like an impossible challenge, but this is effectively what our visiting general evaluators (GEs) do for us at each meeting. But why bother if you’re not a GE yourself? Well, aside from preparing you for the GE role in future, there are some major benefits to informally evaluating every single role and speech you hear at a Toastmasters meeting:

  • It makes you a better listener. Even if you don’t yet feel ready to give a verbal evaluation of someone else’s speech, evaluating everyone forces you to practice and improve your listening skills – which are applicable both in and outside the Toastmasters context.
  • It makes you better at the roles you’re evaluating. Thinking about the commendations and recommendations you might make about someone else’s performance as a toastmaster, speaker or evaluator will mean that you’ll automatically consider and apply those points when it comes to performing the role yourself.
  • It makes you a better problem solver. Regularly evaluating everyone enhances your analytical and critical thinking skills by getting you into the habit of considering things objectively and making suggestions about exactly what could be done differently where necessary.

So have a go at evaluating everyone at the next meeting and, as well as all of the above, it’ll get you prepared for the evaluation contest in the spring!

That’s all for now. See you at a meeting soon!

November Newsletter – Results from Colchester and starting your New Year’s resolutions early

Hello and welcome to the November newsletter!

As I write this, the District 71 autumn conference is coming to a close. No fewer than eight members of Bloomsbury Speakers attended to watch the final rounds of the UK & Ireland humorous speech and table topics contests and learn from some of the best speakers in the country. See below for news from the event.

Meanwhile, our membership base continues to grow with five new members joining in the last two months, and demand to join our club shows no signs of abating. We’re now requiring that guests on our membership waiting list attend at least three meetings before they can join, so keep coming to our meetings if you want to become a member!

If you don’t have time to read the whole newsletter, you can skip to the bottom for a short summary of the main points.

What’s happened since the last newsletter?

As mentioned above, we’ve had five new members join Bloomsbury Speakers recently, so I’d like to officially welcome Tracey, Sarah, Aislinn, Nathaniel and Stella to the club. We look forward to hearing you speak regularly at our meetings!

Once again, we had two well-attended meetings in October. Highlights included a thought-provoking speech on neuroscience from returning member Damien, an informative icebreaker from new member Sarah (who was preparing for a university presentation the next day!) and an advanced storytelling speech from Hari with which he completed his Advanced Communicator Bronze (ACB) award.

What’s planned for November?

There are only four meetings left for the remainder of 2013, so make the most of them! Don’t forget though, members of Bloomsbury Speakers can still book speech slots and roles with Clerkenwell Speakers for the rest of the year (and at no extra cost) via their ClubPlan. Meanwhile, here’s what we have coming up this month at Bloomsbury:

  • Monday, 11th November – Regular Meeting – We have a full programme for our first meeting this month, featuring an impromptu speaking session run by table topics enthusiast Carrie. There are a few pre-bookable table topics slots up for grabs on ClubPlan, so don’t miss out!
  • Monday, 25th November – Regular Meeting – At the time of writing, there is one prepared speech slot available to book, as well as the opportunity to take on functionary roles in the meeting such as timekeeper, grammarian and speech evaluator. Again, book yourself in on our ClubPlan.

Colchester conference and contest results

After the traditional pre-conference Anglo-Irish Toastmasters meeting on Thursday night, the final District 71 autumn conference officially kicked off on Friday with the humorous speech contest semi-finals. President of our sister club Clerkenwell Speakers, Ayse Lowe, impressively qualified for the grand final on Saturday by finishing in the top three of her semi-final with her speech “Culture Clash”.

The competition was tough however, and in the final on Saturday (hosted brilliantly by Tube Talk’s Ola Aralepo who ran our humorous speech workshop earlier this year) the title went to Brian Faulkner from Division G in the east of England who spoke about his experience of being a veterinary surgeon.

Next came the table topics semi-finals in which our member Glen was drawn to speak first on the challenging question, “What is a friend?”. Glen graciously acknowledged his friends from Bloomsbury Speakers in the audience and went on to speak about his personal experience of falling out with a close friend, but again the standard of public speaking at this level was incredibly high and sadly Glen didn’t progress to the final. Nevertheless, we’re immensely proud of him for being the first member of Bloomsbury to represent us at the national level – what a fantastic achievement!

The topic posed in Sunday’s final was “If you could go back in time and give advice to yourself at the age of ten, what would you say?” and the winning response was given by David Jones of our parent club Holborn Speakers. Congratulations to David, who has now won this contest five times, as well as everyone else who took part.

Tip of the Month: Start your New Year’s resolutions now

By far, the most successful New Year’s resolution I’ve ever made was one that I actually made at the end of October the preceding year! I’d resolved to get fitter by taking up running and went on to complete a 10km race the following summer – something that would have been unimaginable just eight months earlier.

As trivial as it may seem, most New Year’s resolutions fail because people simply underestimate the amount of effort involved (especially when combined with the cold weather and weakened finances after Christmas). However, making a head start on our resolutions right now alleviates some of the undue pressure we put on ourselves in the first week of January. Even the smallest steps towards your goals in the next month or two will make it that much easier when the New Year arrives. In my case, I was motivated enough to go for a run on Boxing Day that year because I already knew what I was capable of.

So what does any of this have to do with public speaking? As with anything worth doing well, it’s important to set yourself worthy objectives:

  • Are you aiming to complete your Competent Communication (CC) manual by next June or has it been a while since you last gave a prepared speech? If so, why not aim to give one more speech in the next couple of months, even if it’s at a different club?
  • Which functionary role have you not performed yet or do you feel is your weakest? Why not speak to your mentor about it and aim to perform it once before the end of the year?
  • Are you hoping to compete in the International Speech Contest in March? If so, you’ll need to have completed six of the ten projects in the CC manual in order to be eligible – how can you plan your time between now and then to achieve this?

Start thinking about your aims right now, making sure your objectives are SMART, and hopefully they’ll be the most successful New Year’s resolutions you’ve ever made.

That’s all for now. See you at a meeting soon!
