August Newsletter – Contest Season is Coming (and Other Dates for your Diary)

Hello and Welcome to the August Newsletter!

It’s holiday time – indeed I’m writing this having just returned from a week enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Lake District.  A break from your usual routine can provide the perfect time to plan your next speech (unless like me you’ve spent your holiday in a house with six members of your family so there has never been a quiet moment!).  But spending time on the plane, the sun lounger or sitting at a cafe watching the world go by can get the creative juices flowing and this month there’s a great reason to make time to think about your next speech… the Humourous Speech and Table Topics Contests are approaching!  There will be more on that throughout this newsletter.

If you don’t have time to read the whole newsletter, you can skip to the bottom for a short summary of the main points.

What’s happened since the last newsletter?

We had two meetings in July which were full of new challenges for our members. Rufina, made her debut as Toastmaster and two of our newer members – Emma and Egor –  took on the role of Topics Master for the first time.  Additionally Janet officially became a Competent Communicator by completing her N0 10 speech in which she gave us 10 excellent reasons to speak up and speak out.

What’s planned for August?

We have two meetings in August – on the 11th and 18th (the second of these has been brought forward a week from our usual 4th Monday slot due to the Bank Holiday on the 25th).  It’s a month full of speeches from newer members with an Icebreaker from Robert on the 11th and Emma, Emily, Faith Rose and Egor giving No2 and No3 speeches on the 18th.  As of writing, we are still looking for a Grammarian on the 18th so do sign up on Clubplan if you are available to take this role.

Dates for your Diary

Monday 1st September – we will be hosting our humorous speeches and improvisation workshop on Monday, 1st September. The workshop will be led  by Gayna Cooper who finished second in the UK & Ireland with an impressive speech which many thought was worthy of winning (borrow the DVD if you haven’t seen it).  The workshop is on Eventbrite so register there if you would like to attend. Link:  Humorous Speech & Improvisation Workshop

Monday 8th September – we will be hosting the Bloomsbury Speakers Humourous Speech and Table Topics contests.  Members should already have received an email from Bloomsbury Speakers outlining how to enter (sign up on Clubplan!) and some tips on preparing.  Whilst we want to see as many eligible members as possible enter the contest, in order to have a successful contest we also need non-competing members to:

  • judge contests at other clubs so we can ask their members to judge at our contest.  To be a judge you need to have completed six speeches – there are contests organised throughout September at various London clubs eg Clerkenwell Speakers’ contest is on Wednesday 17th September.
  • help our VPE Helen with organising the judges and the paperwork both before the contest and on the night itself.
  • take a role on the evening – contest chair, vote counters and timekeepers are all needed
  • be enthusiastic audience members at our contest!

Let’s everyone get involved to make this the best ever Bloomsbury Contest!  If you could be a judge at another club’s contest or can spare even a couple of hours to help Helen with our contest organisation please contact her at education@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk

Events at Other Clubs

Saturday 16th August – Excalibur Speakers  are holding what promises to be a lively event at Speakers Corner with lots of audience participation. Sign up at http://www.meetup.com/Excalibur-Speakers/events/194578212/  and don’t forget your picnic!  NB Swarajit is VP of PR of Excalibur this year so can provide further details on this event.

Tip of the month: Contact your Mentor today!

Mentoring is an area of the club’s offering which is underused by many members and mentor / mentee relationships often peter out over time through no fault of either party. However, the benefits of the mentoring relationship for both the mentor and mentee are well worth giving it another shot. Your mentor can provide you with advice and ideas for your speeches and roles and tailored feedback based on individual goals that you’ve shared with them.

From the perspective of the mentor, while the experience of helping your fellow members can be very productive and rewarding in itself, you can also claim credit towards your competent leadership award which, once completed, will entitle you to discounts on your future membership renewals.

It’s often easier than you think to work with your mentor. If you live or work close to each other then perhaps you could meet up over lunch somewhere locally. If not, you can meet immediately before or after one of our regular meetings or other events. Failing that, why not take advantage of some of the modern technology at your disposal, such as Skype video calling?  However you decide to communicate, the benefits are there for the taking.

Who should initiate contact?
It doesn’t really matter which one of you initiates contact, but this month’s tip is aimed at mentees in particular to contact their mentors since one mentor can have several mentees while most people will only have one mentor, which means each of you onlyinitiating contact once.

How do I contact my mentor?
If you don’t have their contact address, the easiest way to get in touch with any other member of the club is via the e-mail icon next to their name on ClubPlan.

What if I don’t have a mentor or know who my mentor is?
Simply contact James (VP Membership and Mentoring) and he will let you know who your mentor is. If you don’t yet have a mentor then he can also help you find one and put you in contact with each other.

How do I contact James?
You can contact him directly at mentoring@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk.

July Newsletter – A New Toastmaster Year

Hello and welcome to the July newsletter!

It’s a new Toastmaster year and so there’s a new committee and a new writer of this newsletter – me!  If you were at the last meeting you will have seen our farewell to our Outgoing President Swarajit and met all of your new Committee but, if you couldn’t make it you will find them listed again in this Newsletter.

The club went from strength to strength during Swarajit’s year as President.  Bloomsbury maintained its’ status as a President’s Distinguished Club  – the highest level of club award given by Toastmasters International.  And we also had two of our members, Glen and Janet, representing us at the district contests where they completed against the best Toastmasters’ speakers from across the UK and Ireland.

Clearly the club is in a very strong place and I will be doing my best to ensure we move further forwards in the next 12 months.  It is, however, a joint effort with every member able to contribute towards the success of every meeting, the winning of each point towards becoming a President’s Distinguished Club and our (hopefully!) ongoing success at area, divisional and district contests.

If you don’t have time to read the whole newsletter, you can skip to the bottom for a short summary of the main points.

My Toastmaster history

For those of you who may not know me well, I attended my first Toastmaster meeting – at  Bloomsbury Speakers – in September 2011.  It was at the time Glen was President and his introductory address was so impressive that, before he had even finished his 4 minute speech, I decided I needed to join the club.  Fortunately, there was no waiting list at the time and a couple of meetings later I was giving my icebreaker.  It was a nerve-racking experience – at one point I felt my knees knocking together – but I took that as a sign that I needed to keep practicing to overcome that fear. I worked through my CC manual which I completed in early 2013 and also joined the committee first as secretary and then VP of Education. Do I still get nervous before a speech? Yes – but there’s a comfort and confidence from knowing that you have spoken in front of a similar sized audience before and it went ok so I focus on that instead.

Goal!!!

No, not the World Cup but it’s a new Toastmasters’ Year.  Just as we make New Year’s Resolutions at the start of a calendar year, a new Toastmasters’ Year is a great time to think about what you want to achieve over the next twelve months. This year my goals are both for the club and me personally.  For the club I’d like to enable us to incorporate the best ideas from other clubs into how we do things at Bloomsbury.  The best way to do this is to visit other clubs and encourage as many members as possible to do the same so we can learn from their way of doing things.  Personally, I’m always impressed by speakers who can move effortlessly around the stage.  I tend to stay firmly in one place (which evaluators kindly refer to as me being ‘centred’!) as I’m not sure how to make moving look effortless and not contrived.  So expect to see me making some clunky onstage moves this year while I figure out how to display my inner gracefulness!  What could your goal(s) for the year be?

Upcoming meetings – July plans and a September workshop

We have two meetings in July – on the 14th and 28th and they look set to be action packed with new challenges for our members.  On the 14th we have one of our newest Competent Communicators, Rufina, making her debut as Toastmaster and a No 10 Speech for Janet which is her first speech since she came 3rd at the UK and Ireland Speech contest in Dublin. On the 28th, we will have an Icebreaker from our latest joiner and July also sees two of our newer members – Emma and Egor –  taking on the role of Topics Master for the first time so Topics Speakers should be ready for any kind of questions!

In September we will be hosting our club Humourous Speech Contest and the winner will go on to represent us at the area contest.  In preparation for this we are holding a humorous speeches and improvisation workshop on Monday, 1st September. The workshop will be led by Gayna Cooper who finished second in the UK & Ireland with an impressive speech which many thought was worthy of winning (borrow the DVD if you haven’t seen it).  The workshop is already up on Clubplan so register there if you would like to attend.

Events at other clubs

Do you like picnics in the sun? Well who doesn’t so why not attend the Area 33 Summer Party on Hampstead Heath on Sunday July 20th.  You can meet members from 5 other Central London clubs, Experience French, St Paul’s Speakers, CASS TM, BAML London TM, ACCA Members Club and our very own sister club Clerkenwell Speakers. The idea is to bring your own food and drinks and the organisers will provide the decoration and entertainment!  For further details and to register attendance go to: https://www.facebook.com/events/789783234374707

Tip of the month: Get out there!   The wider the circle of speakers you are learning from the more you will learn. Here are some ways to supplement what you can learn at Bloomsbury, no matter how new or experienced a member you are:

  • Visit another club’s meeting as a guest either simply to expand your horizons or to give a speech or to be a General Evaluator. The calendar for club meetings is at http://www.thelondonspeaker.com/weblog/london-toastmasters-clubs-meeting-dates.html Speak to Swarajit, Helen or myself if you would like to speak or be a GE.
  • Borrow the DVD of the final of the recent UK and Ireland Speech contest and evaluate the finalists’ performances to see what you could learn. Swarajit has our copy of this DVD.
  • Look for examples of speeches on YouTube and Ted Talks
  • Every Bloomsbury meeting has a member from another club as our General Evaluator. Talk to them about their club and their Toastmaster experiences
  • Attend our workshops – the next is on September 1st – as these are usually led by very experienced speakers from other clubs.

When you find some inspiration bring it back to Bloomsbury and show us what you have learnt so we can all be impressed by your skill and we too can widen our experience!

June Newsletter – A year of achievement, and your new committee

Hello and welcome to the June newsletter!

It’s with a tinge of sadness that I write this, my last introduction to my last monthly newsletter as your president – but I also feel much pride, as it’s been a fantastic year for Bloomsbury Speakers. Not only did we have two of our members, Glen and Janet, representing us at the district contests, but I’m delighted to announce that the club as a whole has managed to achieve Toastmasters International’s highest level of recognition – President’s Distinguished Club – for the second year running!

I’d like to place on record my sincere thanks to our committee officers, without whom none of this would have been possible. So thank you to Jo, Rufina, Ahmed, Paula and of course my predecessor Femi – not forgetting Rajeev, Marie and James who also served on the committee for part of the year. It was a pleasure to work with all of them and they each contributed significantly to the club’s success.

But perhaps the biggest thanks of all should go to our individual members, both old and new, whose enthusiasm for the club continues to make our meetings such a pleasure to attend and – I believe – the envy of many a visiting general evaluator! Thank you, one and all!

If you don’t have time to read the whole newsletter, you can skip to the bottom for a short summary of the main points.

What’s happened since the last newsletter?

We had two marvellous meetings in May in which several members made progress with their speech manuals, including Jon who made a start with his Icebreaker speech and Ahmed and Samuel who each finished their tenth speeches to earn the title of Competent Communicator.

We’ve also had two more new members join in the last few weeks, so welcome to Peter and Emma – we look forward to hearing your Icebreaker speeches this month.

What’s planned for June?

There are just two more meetings left for this Toastmasters year – the new year starts in July – but they both promise to be packed with the usual high standard of speeches and evaluations.

  • Monday, 9th June – Regular Meeting – For our first meeting this month we’re pleased to welcome last month’s UK & Ireland International Speech Contest finalist Flavia Gordon from Lewisham Speakers as our general evaluator. There’s a packed agenda, including a No. 10 speech from Rufina, but a couple of pre-bookable table topic slots may still be available on ClubPlan.
  • Monday, 23rd June – Regular Meeting – My last meeting as president 🙁 and, again, the programme is full. Do check back on ClubPlan regularly to see if any slots become free but, even if they don’t, come along anyway to mark the end of an amazing year for the club!

Distinguished Club Programme (DCP) – the final result!

The Distinguished Club Programme (DCP) is Toastmasters International’s framework of objectives that clubs should aim to achieve within the Toastmasters year (1st July to 30th June), and different levels of recognition are awarded depending on how many of the ten criteria are met.

As already mentioned above, Bloomsbury Speakers has now achieved the highest level of recognition, President’s Distinguished Club status, for the second year in a row – and we’re also the first club in Division L to pass this milestone this year! To attain this level of recognition, we had to achieve nine of the ten goals set by Toastmasters International in their DCP, and here’s a breakdown of everyone who helped us do it:

  1. Two Competent Communicator awards: Swarajit and Paula
  2. Two more Competent Communicator awards: Henry and Ahmed
  3. One Advanced Communicator award: Hari
  4. One more Advanced Communicator award: Not yet achieved
  5. One leadership award: Glen
  6. One more leadership award: Swarajit
  7. Four new members: Sarah, Tracey, Aislinn and Nathaniel
  8. Four more new members: Stella, Rebecca, Michelle, Grace, Svetlana, Egor, Faith-Rose, Emily and Jon
  9. At least four club officers trained at each of two training events: Swarajit, Jo, Ahmed and Paula
  10. On-time submission of club officer list and membership dues: Femi and Ahmed

Thanks to everyone involved, as you’ve helped cement our reputation as one of the best Toastmasters clubs in London, if not the world! 🙂

Meet your new leadership committee

After last month’s sneak peek, I’m very pleased to be able to announce our new executive committee which will take over leadership of the club from July. As is now semi-traditional for Bloomsbury Speakers, our current Vice President Education, Jo will take over as president of the club. Below is the full list of committee members with their main responsibilities, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other ways to get involved – all of our committee members will need assistance with their roles every now and again, so please get in touch if you’d like to help!

Vice President Public Relations – Svetlana Rakhimova

Rebecca The treasurer holds responsibility for the club’s finances. They are responsible for enlisting others to prepare the venue for each meeting and also clear up afterwards, welcoming guests as they arrive and running the guest introductions section of the programme, organising club socials and liaising with venue management on behalf of the club.
Secretary – Liz Walsh
Liz The club secretary is responsible for club administration, particularly with regards to committee meetings and decision making.
Immediate Past President – Swarajit Das
Swarajit The immediate past president stays on the committee for at least one more year in an advisory capacity, using their experience to support the new president and committee in running the club.

I wish Jo and her team all the best going forward and I’m sure they will achieve even more in the year ahead!

District 71 conference DVD and looking ahead to District 91

After our member Janet made it all the way to the last ever UK & Ireland final of the International Speech contest last month, we decided, for the sake of posterity, to purchase the official conference DVD for the club. This DVD is available to lend out to members and contains recordings of the District 71 International Speech and Evaluation contest finals that took place in Dublin last month.

If you’d like to borrow the DVD (and it’s well worth a watch!), just speak to one of the committee members at one of our regular meetings, but in the meantime you can whet your appetite by enjoying Janet’s semi-final performance of her speech “The 5 Stages of Grief” on YouTube:

Meanwhile, preparations are well underway for the first ever District 91 (Southern England and Southern Wales) conference in Brighton. The conference will, amongst other things, play host to the Humorous Speech and Table Topics contest finals – hopefully with representation from Bloomsbury Speakers again – and the ‘early bird’ discounts for booking sooner rather than later end this month. Details are below.

Dates: 31st October-2nd November 2014
Venue: Thistle Hotel, Brighton
Cost: See website
Website: http://www.autumn-conference.org/brighton2014/

Tip of the Month: Try out the Toastmaster role

As a member, the meeting role I find the most enjoyable and simultaneously the most challenging to perform is that of the Toastmaster. It can appear to be quite a daunting task at first, and many members shy away from the role, but it’s definitely the most rewarding and valuable experience in our regular meetings. Here are a few of the reasons why:

  • It maximises your stage time. We all know the importance of taking as many opportunities to speak as possible and, as you’re required to address the audience before and after every single speaker on the programme, no one gets more stage time in a regular meeting than the Toastmaster.
  • It’s both prepared and impromptu. As we like to have themes in our meetings, the role of Toastmaster requires almost as much preparation as a prepared speech. You need to introduce your theme (and role) at the start, as well as familiarise yourself with the speakers’ responses – perhaps adding your own take on them – but you’ll also have to think on your feet when something unexpected happens, whether that’s a change to the programme or an interruption at the venue.
  • It combines skills from the other roles such as time management and listening. The Toastmaster is responsible for keeping the meeting running to time and therefore needs to make on-the-spot decisions about the length of the break and table topics session. Listening carefully to each speaker means that they can also make smooth transitions between each segment by referring back to what the audience just heard.

As you can see, the benefits (and challenges) are plentiful and, speaking personally, the ‘buzz’ I get from performing the Toastmaster role is unlike any other and needs to be experienced first-hand – so if you’ve performed all of the other functionary roles at least once, why not try out the Toastmaster role at the next opportunity? You won’t regret it!

That’s all from me – it’s been a pleasure serving you and I look forward to seeing the club continue to go from strength to strength. See you at a meeting soon!

Bloomsbury Speakers

May Newsletter – More contest news and a new committee takes shape

Hello and welcome to the May newsletter!

First things first – please note that there has been a late change of venue for Monday’s meeting (12th May), which will now take place at The Real Man Pizza Company, just across the road from our usual venue.

I’m sure you’ve all been eagerly awaiting the results of a certain competition, but you need wait no longer as I can report that, despite putting up a brave fight, Bloomsbury Speakers’ team didn’t quite have the winning edge in the inter-club ten-pin bowling match. In the end, the inaugural title went to Experience French, but special recognition should go to our member Rebecca who achieved the highest individual score of 131!

Carry on reading for rather more important contest news. 😉

If you don’t have time to read the whole newsletter, you can skip to the bottom for a short summary of the main points.

What’s happened since the last newsletter?

We enjoyed two regular meetings in April, including a speech from Faith-Rose on her passion for hat-making and an icebreaker from new member Emily.

As mentioned above, we also had our dinner and bowling social with Clerkenwell, Experience French and St. Paul’s Speakers clubs and we hope to have more of these events in the future, if only to get our revenge!

Meanwhile, the other divisions around the country held their contests to decide who would represent them at the UK & Ireland International Speech and Evaluation contests this past weekend (with our member Janet having already qualified last month). More on that later in the newsletter.

What’s planned for May?

There are two regular meetings this month, one with a change of venue and the other with a change of date!

  • Monday, 12th May – Regular Meeting – Please note that this meeting will take place at The Real Man Pizza Company, just across the road from our usual venue. At the time of writing, the programme is almost full but there is still space for one more speech evaluator as well as a Sergeant at Arms to greet and introduce the guests. Sign up for the roles on ClubPlan.
  • Monday, 19th May – Regular Meeting (moved forward) – Due to the bank holiday at the end of May, this meeting has been moved forward a week. At the time of writing, there are slots available for a grammarian and two speech evaluators. Again, book yourself in on ClubPlan.

Results from Dublin and district reformation

As I write this, the last ever conference for District 71 as we know it is drawing to a close in Dublin and the highlight of the event, as ever, was the International Speech and Evaluation contests for the whole of the UK & Ireland.

It kicked off on Friday afternoon with our member Janet giving a stunning performance of her speech “The 5 Stages of Grief” to be named in the top three of her semi-final and qualifying for Saturday’s final.

The standard among the six contestants in Saturday’s final was exceptionally high, but Janet did us proud by giving another brilliant delivery of her speech to finish in third place overall – many congratulations to her for being the first (and last*) member of our club to represent us at the national final of the International Speech contest. What an amazing achievement!

janetflags

The title of District 71 champion went to former president of our sister club Holborn Speakers, Chris Boden with his speech “The Throw”, in which he described his experience of trying out improvised comedy. Chris will now go on to compete in the World Championship semi-finals at the 2014 International Convention in Kuala Lumpur!

The Evaluation contest was won by Simon Bucknall of London Cardinals, who previously won the title in 2009.

* From July this year, District 71 will be splitting in two in order to make room for the expected growth in Toastmasters clubs in the future. The newly formed District 91 will cover southern England and southern Wales and will be headed in its first year by Hilary Briggs, who was elected (unopposed) as District Governor at the district council meeting this weekend. Further congratulations go to our current Area 34 governor Graeme Phillips who was elected as Division L governor for the year ahead.

Welcome to our newest members

I’ve been rather neglectful with this in previous editions of the newsletter, so I’d like to officially welcome all of our new members who have joined the club since December: Michelle, Grace, Svetlana, Egor, Faith-Rose and Emily. All six have made progress with their first speeches and we look forward to hearing more from them at future meetings.

If you’re not yet a member but are keen to join, keep reading!

New committee starts taking shape

We’ve had a very positive response from members putting themselves forward for roles on the next committee, which will take over the running of the club from July onwards. However, we’re still looking for a few more expressions of interest for the role of Sergeant at Arms which, as outlined in last month’s newsletter, holds responsibility for logistics and venue management, welcoming guests to the club, collecting and counting votes at meetings and organising club socials. Contact president@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk if you’d like to be considered for the role.

Meanwhile, we already have one of our new committee members in place. James Hallinan (pictured below) has been Acting Vice President Membership & Mentoring for the last few weeks and will take over permanently from July. He has already taken over management of the membership waiting list, so if you’ve visited us a few times and are keen to join and get started with your first speech, contact James via membership@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk.

James is also in charge of the club’s mentoring programme, so if you’re a relatively new member and feel you could benefit from having a mentor (usually a more experienced member of the club), feel free to contact James via mentoring@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk.

Tip of the Month: Two reasons why speeches fail

This month’s tip comes courtesy of 2011 World Champion of Public Speaking, Jock Elliott from his Dublin workshop, On Target: The Nuts and Bolts in which he described two of the main reasons why speeches fail to meet their objectives.

  • Failing to make your point succinctly. The process of writing an effective speech can be a long one, but the main message must be short and memorable. You should be able to summarise the main message of your speech in one sentence that your audience can take away with them.
  • Failing to connect with your audience. Although many winning speeches involve stories that are important and personal to the speaker, the goal is in fact to express what matters to you in terms that matter to your audience. While people may understand your experiences, they’ll never truly connect until they can relate it to something in their own lives.

You can hear and learn even more from Jock at his workshop in London on Friday, 23rd May (see above).

And finally…

Here are a few more pictures from this weekend’s District 71 conference in Dublin:

April Newsletter – Contest results and joining your leadership committee

Hello and welcome to the April newsletter!

In a break with tradition, I’m going to lead with the key facts as there’s a lot to report this month!

Key facts – just the stuff you really need to know

  • Our neighbouring Division B’s workshops and contests are this Saturday, 12th April, featuring their International Speech and Evaluation contest finals and a keynote presentation from former World Championship finalist Olivia Schofield. Tickets are available from http://celebrate-diversity.eventbrite.co.uk.
  • Our first regular meeting in April is on the 14th. At the time of writing, there is one slot available on ClubPlan for a Sergeant at Arms to greet and introduce the guests.
  • We’re going out for a dinner and bowling social in Shoreditch with our friends from Clerkenwell, Experience French and St. Paul’s Speakers clubs on Friday, 25th April. Contact president@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk if you’d like to attend.
  • On the same night (25th April), our member Mike will be representing Purley Speakers in the Division K International Speech contest final at a venue (TBC) near London Bridge. Keep an eye on The London Speaker for the details.
  • Our second regular meeting of the month is on the 28th. There are still plenty of slots left to fill on ClubPlan, including two prepared speech slots!
  • Congratulations to our member Janet who will be representing us at the District 71 International Speech contest during the King Laoire Conference in Dún Laoghaire, Dublin over the weekend of 9th-11th May.
  • There may be financial support available for any club members who would like to attend the conference in Dublin. Contact treasurer@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk to apply.
  • The club’s committee is looking for its successors to take over in July. Contact any of the current committee members or president@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk if you’re interested in taking on any of the leadership roles.

What’s happened since the last newsletter?

Lots! 😉 Our regular meetings in March included an Icebreaker from new member Egor, an informative No. 2 speech from Sarah on the possible explanations for why yawning is contagious and an inspirational No. 10 speech from Henry with which he completed his Competent Communication manual.

The main events in the past month however have of course been the International Speech and Evaluation contests. It all started at the club level, with Janet and me (Swarajit) progressing to the Area 34 finals. Sadly, that’s where it ended for me in the Evaluation contest, but Janet overcame strong competition from the winners of other clubs in the area to reach the Division L finals – where she went on to beat none other than last year’s District 71 (UK & Ireland) Champion William Dempster to triumph once again! Janet will now progress to the District 71 International Speech contest – see further on in the newsletter for more details.

janet

Meanwhile, our member Mike, who is the current president of Purley Speakers, placed high enough in their club and area contests to progress to the Division K final of the International Speech contest, which is due to take place on Friday, 25th April at a venue (TBC) near London Bridge. Keep an eye on The London Speaker for further details. If Mike wins at this contest, he will join Janet at the District 71 contest in Dublin!

What’s planned for April?

Easter may be on the way, but we still have time for two regular meetings as well as a special social event this month:

  • Monday, 14th April – Regular Meeting – The programme for our first meeting this month is almost full, but we still need a Sergeant at Arms to greet and introduce the guests. Sign up for the role on ClubPlan.
  • Friday, 25th April – Dinner and Bowling Social – A special combined event with three other clubs! See immediately below for the details.
  • Monday, 28th April – Regular Meeting – There are plenty of slots left to fill for this meeting, including two prepared speech slots! Again, use ClubPlan to book yourself in.

Dinner and bowling social – Friday, 25th April

Members will have already received a personal invitation for this, but on Friday, 25th April we’ll be joining our friends from Clerkenwell, Experience French and St. Paul’s Speakers clubs for a night of fun and friendly competition at All Star Lanes, 95 Brick Lane, E1 6QL. The evening will start with pre-drinks from 7pm followed by dinner at 8pm and then, the main event, an inter-club ten-pin bowling match!

The bowling costs just £8.95 per person and we’re looking for a team of seven players to compete against the other clubs. Don’t feel you need to be especially good at bowling to take part it’s just for fun, so please reply to president@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk if you’d like to be on the Bloomsbury Speakers team!

Even if you’d rather not bowl, please do come along for the dinner and drinks beforehand we’ll be going for pre-drinks at the BrewDog, 51 Bethnal Green Road, E1 6LA and the restaurant menu for the bowling venue is available here: http://www.allstarlanes.co.uk/venues/brick-lane/food-drink/restaurant-menu/. The second half of the day will consist of the Division B International Speech and Evaluation contest finals, where we’ll be able to see some of the best speakers from west and south-west London and may even gain some insight into what Janet will be up against in Dublin! Details are below.

District 71 spring conference and contests – 9th-11th May, Dún Laoghaire, Dublin

A highlight of the Toastmasters calendar, this will be the last ever conference under District 71 as we know it (as the district will be splitting in two later in the year). Spanning a whole weekend, the King Laoire Conference in Dún Laoghaire, Dublin will include several educational workshops on different aspects of public speaking and leadership, as well as the semi-finals and finals for the UK & Ireland International Speech and Evaluation contests.

Since at least one of our members (Janet) will be competing in the International Speech contest, the club is once again looking at providing a financial subsidy to members who may want to attend the conference. The size of this subsidy will depend on demand and will only be paid on return from the conference. If you would like to apply for a subsidy, please contact our treasurer Ahmed via treasurer@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk.

Date: Friday 9th-Sunday 11th May
Venue: Royal Marine Hotel, Marine Road, Dún Laoghaire, Dublin

Tip of the Month: Join your leadership committee

Joining your club’s committee is a fantastic way of gaining and putting in to practice those leadership skills that you may not have the chance to work on in your day job – and, just like a regular meeting, a Toastmasters committee is a safe and friendly environment in which to do so. There are roles to suit all levels of skills, experience and time commitment and, not only will you have the opportunity to pick up new skills as well as refine existing ones, but you’ll also have a direct impact on the day-to-day running of your club.

Bloomsbury Speakers’ committee is currently recruiting its successors for the next Toastmasters year (which runs from 1st July to 30th June). Some members have already expressed an interest in certain roles, which is great as we want people who are enthusiastic! However, if you’re not sure what the different roles on the committee actually entail, here’s a quick summary:

Sergeant at Arms (Incumbent: Marie)
The SAA is in charge of logistics. They are responsible for:

  • enlisting others to help them prepare the venue for each meeting and also clear up afterwards;
  • welcoming guests as they arrive at each meeting and running (or delegating) the guest introductions section of the programme;
  • organising club socials and liaising with venue management on behalf of the club.

Treasurer (Incumbent: Ahmed)
The treasurer holds responsibility for the club’s finances. Their duties include:

  • keeping track of the club’s income and expenditure to ensure financial stability;
  • paying dues and other costs on behalf of members to Toastmasters International;
  • making sure members pay their renewal fees to the club on time.

Secretary (Incumbent: Paula)
The club secretary is responsible for club administration, particularly with regards to committee meetings and decision making. Responsibilities include:

  • arranging and communicating the dates, times and venues for forthcoming committee meetings;
  • recording and circulating the minutes and action points from club committee meetings;
  • ordering stationery and equipment (with permission of the treasurer) on behalf of the club.

Vice President Public Relations (Incumbent: Rufina)
The VP Public Relations is responsible for raising the club’s profile and attracting new guests e.g. via social media. Regular tasks will include:

  • putting a team together to help write up the meeting reports after each regular meeting and contest;
  • keeping the club’s website and Meetup page up-to-date, along with other media;
  • maintaining the club’s guest book and mailing list and sending out e-mail campaigns.

Vice President Membership & Mentoring (Incumbent: Rajeev)
The VP Membership & Mentoring converts guests into happy members! They will do this by:

  • keeping track of the membership waiting list and inviting an appropriate number of guests to join as new members each month;
  • ensuring that new members have all the information they need when they first join;
  • assigning a mentor to each new member and monitoring their relationship.

Vice President Education (Incumbent: Jo)
The VP Education is the second most senior position on the committee and is responsible for putting the programme together for each meeting along with keeping track of the educational progress of individual members and the club as a whole. Regular responsibilities will include:

  • ensuring all the speech slots and functionary roles (including general evaluators) are filled for every meeting and arranging printing of the programme;
  • tracking individual members’ progress through their communication and leadership manuals and submitting educational achievements to Toastmasters International;
  • administration of ClubPlan and enlisting the help of other members in organising club contests.

President (Incumbent: Swarajit)
The president has overall responsibility for the successful running of the club by supporting committee members in their roles (including all of the above) as well as opening and closing every meeting, writing these newsletters and helping the club meet its goals in the Distinguished Club Programme – and much more besides!

Intrigued by what you’ve read here? Well, why not consider joining the next committee in July? It’s a great way of giving back to the club and you’ll be certain to benefit immensely from the experience yourself. If you’re interested in filling any of the roles above in the coming year, feel free to contact the incumbent member directly or write to president@bloomsburyspeakers.org.uk to express your interest – and if you’re a member of another club, get involved there too!

That’s all for now. See you at a meeting soon!
